This will invariably return when the company checks your references. Instead, be honest. Whatever your situation, give a positive image of the situation. If you have used your time productively, for example by volunteering, developing a new skill or undertaking a training, mention it in your cover letter. Sending more or less the same letter may seem like a quick way to get a lot of applications, but if you take the time to tailor each cover letter, it will help you stand out from the crowd. If you have been out of work for a while, you may be tempted to exaggerate claims or use meaningless snapshots. Instead, be sure to quantify your statements with real evidence and statistics. For example, you could say, \During my time in the role, I worked well with other colleagues, which led to my promotion to the team leader.
